Artist Stories: Dancer Chiara Schmiedel
Following our conversation with Saskia Neuen, the second half of this Artist Stories chapter turns to Chiara Schmiedel, the dancer who embodied of our linen pieces. For Chiara, movement is a profound language of vulnerability, therapy, and liberation. In this intimate interview, she opens up about discovering her physical voice, finding grace within injury, and the freeing sensation of dancing in Nibi's garments. Her reflections offer a beautiful exploration of rawness, fragility, and the profound strength found in moving authentically.
The Language Beyond Words
Do you remember the first time movement felt like more than motion, the moment it became emotion?
When I was 12 I had my first role dancing in the performance of my dance school. I was feeling so much and I was realising dance is how I express, connect and feel.
What does dance awaken in you that nothing else in life can reach?
The truest feeling of emotion that I cannot describe with words. It’s the way I feel the most alive and can travel places that are beyond reality.
When did you first sense that your body carried its own voice, and that through dance, it could finally speak?
In the end of my first year studying dance I was connecting more and more with contemporary dance and I started to feel I finally start discovering and developing a truer language to express with my movement. I got more powerful and more tools than when I was only practicing classical dance. When I discovered more physical theatricality, things even made more sense to my body.
Navigating Limits and Finding Freedom
How has your relationship with dance evolved, from something you practiced, to something that now feels like part of your being?
COVID changed a lot. I was in the middle of my dance study, ready to learn, move and train. But possibilities were limited. I started to discover choreography literature, watching dance videos and reflecting through writing and improvisation became a tool I use until now. Finally I think it’s time and the landing or training and education and offers the possibilities to freely move and express more authentic to your personality.
Do you experience dance as a form of freedom, or as a gentle discipline that keeps you close to yourself?
For me it’s a form of freedom even though I enjoy limitation and forced energy in movement qualities because they make freedom and softness even more strong.
When your body feels heavy or tired, what rituals bring you back to presence, to softness?
Yoga, moving freely, music and imagination, dreaming of movement
Every artist walks through moments of doubt or fatigue. What has been your most human challenge, physical or emotional, and how did you find grace within it?
When I got injured for the first time with more impact on my career and education I felt so many frustration and limits. It was moth of a dark whole. Now after I can say that my body and mind got time to reflect and I moved differently after and not in a bad way. I digested my skills.
What has dancing alongside Saskia taught you about yourself?
Dancing alongside Saskia for me is trust, support a beautifully balanced energy and positivity that she transfers to me.
Embodying Nibi: Conscious Movement
How did you feel when being asked to join Nibi’s Artist Stories, what about it spoke to your inner world?
It gave me a feeling of freedom, consciousness and clarity. I connect these words with the essence of the brand and what the clothes and people represent.
Was there a specific piece that felt like an extension of your own skin, one that made you feel both vulnerable and free?
The Heirloom Top with the open back. Whenever I feel my back free it’s like offering my wings fly. Especially for movement it’s an amazing feeling and supports liberation.
Movement as Therapy and the Power of Art
Beyond dance, what nourishes you, a place, a texture, a sound, a memory?
Grief in its liberation, movement is therapy, movement is breath and moving daily is a ritual to my body and mind. Sharing this with colleagues and in my classes is what I enjoy. Guiding people in this way of expressing, reflection and digesting.
When creativity falls silent, how do you find your way back to it?
Movement research, images, memories. I get inspired from human beings, stories from daily life and how we can transfer these dynamics to movement and composition.
What do you hope lingers in those who witness your movement?
Rawness, authenticity, fragility and strength.
If dance could whisper something back to you, what do you think it would say?
You’re safe, so go out there, trust, enjoy, celebrate and feel it all. Embrace things with balance.
In your opinion, why is art still essential today?
It’s is the way to express the honest an authentic way without needing to stick to reality. It can unfold dreams and it has its power to connect.
